Full disclosure, I suck at rounded hems. But I will share some of the tricks I learned along the way. AND Pockets! Because who doesn't love a skirt with pockets!? Skill Level: Intermediate Notions:
Tips & Tricks Pockets: Want a cheaters tip? For pocket patterns I trace on paper from another skirt and copy the measurements. Now you know my secrets. Waist Band: I love the look of a flat waist band, but love an elasticized band more. A mixed band is a great win-win for comfort and style! The trick here is to sew one side of the elastic to the waistband, but before gathering and attaching the other end, sew the band flat to the flat back edge of the skirt. Then, in sections, gather the front skirt edge along where the flat band will sit and attach. Lastly, push the other end of the elastic through and secure. For a cleaner look I sew the elastic to the fabric in two lines. Rounded Hem:
The technique that I have found most effective is to do a 1" baste stitch along the rounded hem, then use that as your fold line. The tricky part is that you need to fold 2x, while you iron and pin along the edge. Use LOTS of pins. Then sew closed. After you hem is complete, pull the baste stitch out and Iron it again to smooth out the fabric.
