Baby Blanket

Full disclosure, by no means am I a quitter, so I am sure there are better techniques out there. This is my first go at, but I am pretty happy with the results and so is E.

Skill level: Beginner to Intermediate

​Partly made from 100% organic fleece

Materials:
  • Minky fabric
  • Fleece or other soft fabric
  • Thread
  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Fabric pencil

How to Guide:
 
Measure and cut it out
  • Minky fabric:
    • 40” x 54” for the back of the blanket
    • 6” x 64” for the trim length 2X
    • 6” x 50” for the trim width 2X
  • Fleece fabric:
    • 40” x 54” for the front of the blanket
 
Count it and cut it out
  • Lay out the length of your trim fabric on a hard smooth surface, right side up.
  • Place the width of your trim fabric on top, right side down.
  • Pin in place.
  • Repeat for second trim.

 Paper cuts
  • Using the corner of your paper, measure 2.5” along each side and mark it.
  • Cut your paper just below the marks.
  • Place the point of the paper on the top edge of your trim.
  • Line up the point with the center and the side edges where you marked the paper.
  • Use your fabric pencil to trace along the edge of the paper.
  • Repeat for second trim.

Sew, sew
  • Sew along the line you drew.
  • Repeat for second trim.

Unfold
  • Cut the edges off along your sew line.
  • Fold your trim right side out.

 Match up
  • Lay your trim out so that the corners are across from each other and the lengths and widths are matched up.
  • At each unsewn corner, place the length and width of your trim fabric right sides together.
  • Pin in place.
 
Paper cuts
  • Place the point of the paper on the top edge of your trim.
  • Line up the point with the center and the side edges where you marked the paper.
  • Use your fabric pencil to trace along the edge of the paper.
  • Repeat for second trim.
 
Sew, sew
  • Sew along the line you drew.
  • Repeat for second trim.
 
Unfold
  • Cut the edges off along your sew line.
  • Fold your trim right side out.
  • You should now have a complete border.
 
Iron and baste
  • On a light heat setting, iron your corners.
  • Line up your salvage edges and pin your border closed
  • Baste stitch your border edge.

Front side
  • Lay out your fleece fabric on a hard smooth surface, right side up.
  • Lay your border on top and line up edges.
  • Fold the outer edge of your border inwards so that the salvage edge meets the edge of your fleece edge.
  • Pin in place.
  • Sew edges.
  • Repeat for each side.

Back side
  • Lay out the front of your blanket on a hard smooth surface, right side up.
  • Fold the border into the centre.
  • Place your minky fabric on top, right side down.
  • Line up the minky edges with your fleece
  • Pin in place.
  • Sew edges.
  • Repeat for each side, but leave a small opening.

  • Serge edges, optional.

​Fold out
  • Flip your blanket right side out using the unsewn opening.
  • Pin the opening closed
  • Stitch opening shut.
