I inherited this vintage sewing table from my Grandmother, and we have had it on display it in our home for a few years. My Grandma was a woman ahead of her time. She had a quick-wit, a feisty attitude (understatement) and an unstoppable optimism. So in honour of her, I thought I would give it an update. I think she’d be happy with how it turned out!

Skill Level: Beginner
Materials
  • Vintage sewing machine (the base)
  • Slab of marble
  • Plywood
  • Wood paint

Tools
  • Electric drill
  • Electric saw
  • Electric sander
  • Screw driver
  • Tape measure

How to Guide

Deconstruct
  • Detach and remove the top of the sewing table from the stand.
  • Hold on to the screws.
  • If the base is dusty, hose it down.

Measure, cut and prep
  • Measure and mark plywood 2’ by 1’
  • Cut using saw.
  • Give the surface and edges a light sand.

Drill it
  • Place plywood on top of stand and mark where the screws will go.
  • Drill pilot holes

Paint it
  • Paint the edges and bottom of the plywood. I suggest using a colour similar to your marble.
  • Let it dry.

Mark it
  • Lay marble face down on a smooth surface.
  • Place plywood on top of marble.
  • Center the plywood using tap measure.
  • Mark the corners.

Guerilla Glue
  • Away from the marble, place plywood painted side down.
  • Apply epoxy glue to unpainted surface as directed. I used Guerilla Glue.
  • Carefully place plywood on top of marble, lining up the marked corners.
  • Place heavy objects on top and let dry for 24 hours.
